Federal Electricity and Water Authority (FEWA):
The Federal Electricity and Water Authority (FEWA), was established in 1999 to generate and distribute electricity and water in the Northern Emirates of Ajman, Ras Al Khaima, Fujairah and Umm Al Qwain. FEWA owns and operates six power generating plants and three water desalination plants, having a total installed generation capacity of 990 MW of power and 38 MIG/day of water per day in 2005. Total installed power generation capacity is expected to grow to 1,800 MW by 2010; however, these expansions are under review due to issues related to fuel supply and the comparative efficiency of proposed new plant facilities. Expansion of potable water production facilities is similarly under review.
Current peak electricity and water consumption have both become constrained by installed capacity constraints, and FEWA is in discussions with ADWEA regarding the import of additional power from the ADWEA system.
